Hi, I’m Scott — and welcome to Recipe Remodeler.
I’ve always believed that the best recipes aren’t finished — they’re just waiting to be improved.
That philosophy started in the kitchen a long time ago, somewhere between watching my mother cook birthday dinners from memory and realizing that the meals I loved most weren’t just about ingredients. They were about technique, and intention, and the stories behind them. Recipe Remodeler is where all of that comes together.
So what does “remodeling” a recipe mean? It means I don’t leave well enough alone. I take a classic — something familiar and beloved — and I dig into it. Why does this work? What would happen if we browned the butter first? Can we build more flavor without more work? Then I test it, revise it, and share everything I learned along the way, including the failures.
My wife Brenda and I recently stepped into retirement, and cooking has moved front and center in this new chapter of our lives. We’re baking more, experimenting more, and enjoying the kind of unhurried time in the kitchen that busy careers rarely allowed. You’ll find her influence throughout this blog — she’s my most honest critic and my most enthusiastic taste tester.
The recipes here pull from a lot of places: the comfort food of my upbringing, South Carolina barbecue traditions, a memorable meal on a terrace in Positano, and the kind of everyday cooking that fills a home with good smells on a Tuesday night. Some posts are deeply personal — like the birthday dinner series I’m writing to honor my late mother’s annual meal. Others are pure technique geek-outs. Most are a little of both.
A few things you’ll find on this site:
• Classic recipes rebuilt with better technique and explained in detail
• Personal stories, because food without context is just fuel
• Honest notes on what worked, what didn’t, and why I changed it
• Recipes tested in a real kitchen by real people who eat what they make
I’m glad you’re here. Pull up a chair, try something new, and let me know what you think.
